Privacy Policy
Last updated: 25 August 2026.
This policy explains what personal information Get a Will collects when you use this site, why we collect it, whether you have to give it to us, who we share it with, and what rights you have over it under South Africa's data protection law, the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).
1. Who is responsible for your information
Get a Will is a product of Vision Risk and Investment Consultants (Pty) Ltd, registration number 2009/019933/07, a licensed financial services provider, FSP No. 43853, of Unit 9, Tyger Quays, Carl Cronje Drive, Bellville, Cape Town, 7530. This company is the "responsible party" under POPIA for the personal information collected through this site.
If you have any question about your information or want to exercise any of the rights listed below, email privacy@getawill.co.za.
2. What we collect, and why
Everything below is only collected if you actually use the will tool, the "speak to a consultant" request, or the estate-admin-fee policy questionnaire. We don't collect anything just from you browsing the site.
- Your details: full name, South African ID number, email address, cellphone number, physical address, and marital status. We use this to draft your will document correctly and to identify you if you ask us to contact you.
- Your spouse or partner's details (name and ID number), if you tell us you have one. Used the same way, since they may be named in your will.
- A beneficiary's details (your relationship to them, their name, and their ID number if you know it), if you're leaving your estate to someone other than a spouse or partner. Used to name that person correctly in your will.
- Information about your estate: an approximate range for the total value of your assets, and who you'd like as executor and backup executor. Used to draft your will and, for the asset value, to give a rough sense of estate-admin fees if you later ask about a policy for those fees.
- Your consent choices: whether you've agreed to your information being processed outside South Africa, and whether you've opted in to marketing updates.
- Details you give us if you ask to speak to a consultant, or ask about a policy to cover estate-admin fees: your preferred contact time, any note you add, and which insurance provider you're interested in, if any. Used to route your request to the right person and let them contact you.
We do not currently ask about children, income, education, or smoking status. If that ever changes, this policy will be updated first.
3. Is any of this voluntary, and what happens if you don't give it
Your full name, ID number, email, phone number, physical address, and marital status are mandatory: the tool checks for them at each step, and won't let you move forward, generate your will, or send a request without them. The same applies to your spouse or partner's name and ID number if you've told us you have one, to your beneficiary's relationship and name if you're naming someone other than a spouse or partner, to your approximate asset value range, and to who you'd like as executor.
If you don't provide these, we simply can't generate a will document for you: there isn't enough information to draft it correctly, so the tool stops you before you get there.
A few things are optional: your beneficiary's ID number, a backup executor, any note you add on the consultant or policy forms, and the marketing opt-in. Leaving these out doesn't stop you getting your will document.
You also need to tick the consent checkbox about your information being processed outside South Africa before you can download your draft or send any request. Without that consent, we can't process your details at all, so the tool can't proceed. See section 4 below for why we ask for this.
4. Where your information is stored
Your details are submitted through Make.com, an automation platform, which records them in a Google Sheet we use to manage will requests and consultant leads. Like every service currently available to us, Make.com's and Google's infrastructure sits outside South Africa. That means submitting the will form involves your personal information being transferred to, and processed in, a foreign country. This is why the form asks you to tick a specific consent box for this before anything is submitted, separate from the marketing opt-in.
The connection the website itself uses to submit your details is a one-way webhook that can only add new records. It cannot read back, change, or delete anything that's already been submitted, so your information can't be pulled back out through the site once it's in.
5. Who we share your information with
We do not sell your information, and we do not share it with anyone for their own marketing purposes.
- Make.com and Google (Google Sheets), our automation and record-keeping providers, store your details on our behalf (see section 4).
- Google Analytics 4 and Meta Pixel, our website-usage and analytics providers, process usage data about visits and will-tool step progress.
- If you ask to speak to a consultant, or ask about a policy to cover estate-admin fees, your details are emailed to a licensed insurance broker, either at Vision Brokers or at Vision Direct, depending on what you tell us. That broker contacts you directly. We never send your details straight to an insurance product provider ourselves: brokers get quotes from providers such as Capital Legacy, Discovery, or Momentum on your behalf, you don't deal with the provider directly unless and until you choose to.
- If you go ahead with a policy through a broker, that broker will share the details the insurer needs as part of arranging your policy. That happens through the broker's own process once they're working with you, not automatically through this website.
- An email service provider is used to deliver the notification email when you ask to speak to a consultant or request a policy quote. They only handle the message in transit.
6. Marketing
The marketing opt-in checkbox on the form is unticked by default. If you tick it, we may send you occasional updates about wills and estate planning by email or WhatsApp. If you don't tick it, we won't. Either way, you can opt out at any time by emailing privacy@getawill.co.za, and any marketing message we send will tell you how to opt out directly from that message too.
7. How long we keep your information
We keep your information for as long as we reasonably need it for the purposes described above, or for as long as the law requires, whichever is longer. After that, we delete or de-identify it.
8. Your rights
Under POPIA, you have the right to:
- ask us what personal information we hold about you;
- ask us to correct or update it if it's wrong;
- ask us to delete it, subject to any legal reason we may need to keep it;
- object to how we're processing it, including for marketing;
- withdraw any consent you've given us, which doesn't affect anything we did lawfully before you withdrew it; and
- lodge a complaint with South Africa's Information Regulator if you believe we've handled your information incorrectly.
To exercise any of these, email privacy@getawill.co.za. To complain to the Information Regulator directly, use their eService Portal at inforegulator.org.za, or contact their general enquiries line on 0800 017 160 or enquiries@inforegulator.org.za.
9. Changes to this policy
We may update this page as the site, our providers, or the law change. The date at the top shows when it was last updated.
10. This isn't legal advice
This page explains how we handle your personal information. It isn't legal advice, and it doesn't replace the "make it legal" signing and witnessing instructions the will tool walks you through separately.
